Is that why you bought the iPad? One would think if you have an iPad, you'd already see the error in judgement that you made there. Just because Apple stuff looks cool doesn't mean it's sacrificing function - to the contrary.

If you've used an iPhone, or iPad, for any period of time you'd know that.

Other computer makers put wavy lines, green blinking lights and all sorts of other kitsch on their machines - by kitsch I mean design features that have no function, that are there only to look "good".

When has Apple made a device that didn't work very well??? You'd have to go all the way to the Newton for that. And that happened while Steve Jobs was away, not a co-incidence. Ever since the iPod, it's been hit after hit.

Well, I think the previous commenter's point has some validity. A great example of this "form over function" is the iMac. Mobile graphics (and poor ones at that), horrendous thermal management, limited stand orientation...but one damn fine looking computer:D Dont get me wrong, Apple does amazing things with their products. (Im obviously a fan :D) But I do think design is paramount to their efforts (not that function ever takes backseat, it just can be slightly lessoned on some releases). Now, IMO...they knocked both form and function out of the park with the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and 2010 MBA. Bravo

Ehh, purposeful or not (as a sabotage)...not good news for iPad competition:( Which isnt good news for us iPad users...Apple needs constant pressure to release revolutionary products.

Of course not purposeful. They bought what they needed and couldn't care less as long as they got what they needed.
Why would anybody care about competitors getting any components of any kind, if they get what they need?

Don't agree that Apple needs constant pressure.

Any good company gets its pressure from within (to make it's products better, to sell the next generation) and from market research and consumer communications.

I bet they know that MobileMe sucks (I gave it up as there is better stuff for free) and will do a major overhaul.

I think we will see tablets taking a big chunk out of notebooks and become the next note book generation.

The next revolutionary thing. (Dick Tracy watch that works:-)
Could be that we'll all run around with little receivers and get the info out of the cloud via Wifi type "Gas" station network free of specific carriers.
You'd go to such a station and dial yourself into your network as they all have Verizon, ATT , but they'd also have the renegades etc.

These receivers will be able to project anything one would normally watch on a screen onto anything flat (wall , paper , desktop, side of a briefcase, even your hand etc.) so the current panels could become strong projecting lenses.

Lenses can be smaller to project, so development of image sensors is next.

Go RIM , MS and start developing or Apple will.

I bet it won't be long until a third party developer creates an app for it. I will consider Apple's offering (if there is one) before deciding to dedicate to this one since I need something like this.

With the cloud computing stuff there is too much additional fees. I'm not interested.

I already pay for my hardware that sits in my house.
I already pay for my mobile hardware that goes with me.
I already pay for operating system and other software updates for both.
I already pay my ISP for connectivity.
I already pay my phone provider for connectivity (actually my ISP).
I already pay my web host company for bandwidth and disk space.*
I'm NOT interested in paying Apple another subscription fee on top of all that.

Access to my data from my mobile devices should be transparent and should be part of their shared OS. No need for more billing complexity.

    K.I.S.S.

*Why don't I self-host on my home machine? Bandwidth limits of my ISP and the fact that they are a monopoly. A server farm offers orders of magnitude faster connectivity.

It's bootable (the, ahem, pirated versions of Lion are distributed as dmgs.)

That doesn't mean the App Store version is. Only that the "pirated" versions are. They could have been made bootable after the fact.

The last rumor I had read stated we would not see these machines for 5 or 6 weeks. They are available today. Glad we went to Intel.

Apple should sell a ton of these since there are those who waited for the Intel chips in the desktops. Once Photoshop comes out with the Intel version the transition is complete.

I was hoping to see some new displays but the drop in price was good news never the less.

By this time next year AAPL should be worth double:)

How is a cloud based system going to work when bandwidth limits for cell phone data is low, and overage fees are high?

I really hope wwdc is going to focus on computers rather than its IOS toys.

Do you guys think we'll be able to buy merom replacement motherboards for MBP?

Apple has never done this for notebooks. Apple used to do it for desktops - I remember when they had PPC upgrade boards for the Quadras. They weren't really upgrade boards - they were refurb machines without hard drives or memory - just swapped them over.

Yes - I'm getting old - actually used to work at an Apple Service Centre at that point.

For those of you hoping for a mid-range tower, you're looking at it. Take the processor down from dual 2.66Ghz to dual 2.0 and the HD down from 250GB to 160, and you're looking at a $2124 machine.

I sincerely doubt Apple will introduce any new model to its current lineup of mini/pro, macbook/macbook pro. Your best hope is a supermini.

Did I suggest that? I think not.

Well, you provided a cautionary tale in response to my suggestion.

That's why I asked how you felt about it.

    Please note ... I asked.

If something is making money why would you cut it?

    That's my question.

What I really wanted to say is that Google is going to run their datacentres on ARM

There you go again with facts. Citation needed. I think what you want to say here is :

"There was some speculation last year that Google might switch to ARM for their datacenters and servers after an acquisition of an ARM technology company".

There is no way you can state what you are stating as a fact right now. ;)

But the fact that Google bought a company developing ARM processors and also hired engineers from PA Semi that previously worked on Apple's A4 chips

Yes, that is a fact you can state.

means that they ARE going to produce their own ARM chips

Not all acquisitions end up in workable projects. Google does a lot of acquisitions, some of them just end up as IP port-folio fodders, some of them get recycled into products, some of them just get abandonned. Who knows what Google is planning ?

either for their own Android phones or more likely for their datacentres.

How is it more likely for their datacenters, in light of Google's staff saying ARM isn't ready for the datacenter ? I'd say at this point, it's more likely for the Chrome OS based netbooks that will probably never see the light of day officially beyond the Cr48.

This seems like an inevitable move in the convergence of iOS devices and Mac computers. They will eventually be the same thing. Powerful, robust, thin, power efficient, easy to use touch interface.

I don't think Macs will move to ARM.

I do think we'll see MUCH more convergence of iOS 5 and OSX Lion than people are expecting - the 2 OSes will truly be released as "partner" OSes.

Perhaps we'll see an iOS laptop - an iPad with a keyboard basically. Perhaps Macs will run iPad apps alongside dashboard apps. Certainly macs will add touch screens as soon as touch screens don't cost too much extra.

Apple will certainly be keeping their options open.

Some will be bothered about IOS not being the most dominant. I personally don't care, I just want the best mobile OS.

iOS is neither, at the moment. I suppose that might change with iOS 5.0. I certainly hope it does. But with it looking like Apple is phoning in the iPhone 5th gen, I suspect these numbers will be crushing a year from now.

I suspect by that time Android will hold fully 50% marketshare.

    > And how would Microsoft go about "leveraging the desktop"? People throw out computers and buy an iPad. People don't say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy a Microsoft tablet to go with it". They say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy an iPad so I can get rid of that old PC"

Not true. People go with what they know - and Apple/Google are quickly setting the new OS standard for tablets; But do not ignore that's LOTs of people that are familiar with Windows (over 1 billion window users. Are they going to throw that away or find a way to leverage?).

I think for the first time, computing is morphing into pro and consumer lines. There will always be a need for powerful desktop machines for PhotoShop, making movies, engineering, architecture, etc. They need big monitors, monitors that at this point at least are largely terrestrial. Then there is the mobile business market. The coders, the salespeople, etc. They don't need a massive screen or massive computing power. A laptop works just fine for them. Finally, there's the consumer market. Tablets do almost everything they need. The cloud and mobile broadband provide them all the computing power and storage they need.

Where does Microsoft fit into this? Their licensing fees are truly exorbitant and there's been a study flow of customers away from MS. No surprise there. They're always playing catchup in regards to Apple and Google. Where is their relevance in today's computing world? I'm having a hard time seeing it outside of a few specialized applications. MS has become IBM.

I think the thing to note here is that, yes Apple has the power and money to hold down the main supply of the worlds touchscreen panels but we shouldn't go and believe they are doing it JUST to be anti-competative, they are hardly getting enough for themselves. Its not their fault everyone wants an iPad (blame the competition lol) , so at least the panels are getting used :)

It is ironic that Apple created this market and now is being thrashed because the iPad is selling like gangbusters and so there's simply no extra capacity available to anyone else.

When the iPad debuted with such low prices, I was convinced that Apple was determined to corner the tablet market. I'm now more convinced than ever, that is Apple's intention. They'd be stupid not to buy up all the component capacity. The iPad is a major hit.

I must say i just found this sight through google and had to join because of this post. I am a math teacher and the correct answer is 2

    48/2(9+3) is a different equation than 48/2 * (9+3)

using Pemdas or the correct order of operations in the first problem
we first add whats in the parentheses (9+3)= 12
second step we multiply 2(12) =24
    final step 48/24 = 2

the people who are getting 288

    are adding (9+3) =12
then they are skipping an order of operations and going straight to division 48/2 =24
    24 * 12 = 288

Multiplication doesn't have precedence over division in the order of operations. 123(1+2)5*67*9 would have the parenthesis done first.. then the rest done left to right. So the next step is 123*35*67*9

Wolfram alpha visualises both of those as the same. i.e.

    http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=123%281%2B2%295*67*9

    and

    http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=123*35*67*9

I agree that the translation of the equation into ascii can cause cause some vagueness, or at least second guessing the intent of the author (was he short handing "all over" with "/" for example). But we have to work with what we have, and I definitely see it as a 288.

SI is superior in conversions only
Imperial is superior as I actually have a feel for the numbers

I also have a better feel for imperial units, but wouldn't someone who has grown up with SI have a great feel for those units?

The conversion to SI would be confusing for those who haven't grown up with it, I know I would have a bit of trouble getting used to it, but after a generation or two everyone would be used to SI.

Thanks to Tstreete and Jade for sharing information about the TomTom car kit and "other" places that it can be purchased at a discount. Also thanks for researching other vendors. Also, whoever posted info on the Arkon Friction Mount--also thanks as that may be a good option to avoid window mounting.

I am waiting for Tstreete to do his "acid" test and hopefully report back.

    Couple of questions:
Assume you mounted on windshield. How was "view" while driving. Could you see the iphone and maps easily? Might a dashboard mount be better as it would be closer?

Also, how do you connect the mount to your radio system? Sorry if stupid question but haven't seen anything on it other than you need audio cable. Is it hardwired or a plugin somewhere near the radio. From reading the above posts it appears that spoken directions come thru radio speakers as would music BUT phone calls come through iphone/tomtom speakers. Correct?

If I have bluetooth via the steering wheel can that be incorporated with the car kit? not sure i would want to as it was a pain to use when i had it set up in the first place. I also had a BlueAnt bluetooth that I used with my BB Storm but it will not sync my contact list while using the iphone. Might I be able to use this feature? again might just be easier to use iphone voice dialing.

Thanks all for helpful information. I too agree that we each make our own decision on whether or not to by the tomtom dock. It depends on what we are trying to accomplish. Bashing the price point is really counterproductive as we each have the option to buy it or not. oops didn't mean to get on a soapbox here.

    Thanks again,

    Mike
