Appearing earlier this year, the Chevy Cruze was immediately captivated journalists and customers. She had also won our tester, who had the chance to discover the premiere last March. We have now taken over the diesel version the more powerful the TCDI 150 hp.
What we sometimes forget, however, is that the Cruze is available in diesel, 2.0 TCDI 150 horses since its inception, joined by a declination from 125 horses of the same block. What a glimpse of her success in Europe … well almost. For us, the current standard in this range (compact sedans: Megane, 308, Golf, Octavia, ..) is rather around 100 to 110 horses, 1.5l or 1.6l if possible. The powerful 2.0l Cruze are therefore almost a “large” blocks for our country. A rather strange choice on the part of General Motors, which had yet in his bank organs tested 1.3 CDTI or 1.7 CDTI 90 or 110 hp … and the future Astra (based on the same platform) will have it ( of at least 1.7l). Blocks which offered the added advantage of being “bonussés in France, while the Cruze is content neutral. While fear of cannibalization on an Astra-end career? Perhaps, especially since the car does not lack qualities to scare his cousin, and perhaps his descendant (expected in Frankfurt for recall).
To avoid duplication with our previous test, I do not remake a complete presentation of self. However, one of the first things that strike when boarded, is this impressive instrument panel and the generous roominess that benefit passengers. For some, it’s like a car in the higher category, the Insignia, for example.
Contact. No doubt it has much to do with a diesel unit, as we remember the sounds they emit. Fortunately, the soundproofing engine was well worked and the sound is not too present in the cabin … at least stop. Same observation in regard to vibration or hauled in the steering wheel, which have nothing to envy the tenor of the segment.
On the road, the Cruze advantage of the 150 horses and 320Nm of torque the engine submitted to ensure acceleration and more times than correct. The problem is that this maximum torque is transmitted from only 2,000 rpm and below 1.700tr/min it happens, so to say, absolutely nothing. Rather embarrassing or confusing when it comes to resume after a tight turn or when addressing an overflow. Always better off “switch” a report. The engine is also very present between the two engine speed, emitting a sound very hoarse, very surprising in a modern diesel car.
In terms of comfort and driveability, the Cruze is no exception. Suspensions, although somewhat stiff in the rear filter pretty well all the roughness of the road, and therefore provide a level of comfort to passengers about right, while avoiding self to take too much roll in curves. Same conclusion regarding the soundproofing general since at legal speed, no aerodynamic noise can be heard.
Consumption side, Chevrolet announces 5.6 l/100km in the combined cycle. To me, the trip computer showed a little more than 6 litres/100km at the end of this week’s test.
Daily, self appears very practical, despite its three-box architecture. The trunk has a capacity for significant class (450 liters) and may need to extend through the rear seat folding into two parts. The Cruze is also using lighting “Follow me home” leaving the lights on for a few moments after stopping the car. Very convenient when returning home very late.
Chevrolet thus achieves good performance with the Cruze. Pleasant and well finished, she appears more comfortable and dynamic way. We expected no less with 150 hp under the hood you ask.
As we can see how brilliantly Chevrolet makes us forget the Nubira, we can only wait impatiently for the replacement of the Nubira and Lacetti SW, the body much more popular at home, with variations of the Cruze that the American brand so its relative anonymity.
