Tokyo 2009: Classic Japanese Cars

Together with their new production cars and concept studies, some domestic automakers also brought along with them a handful of Japanese classics to display at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show floors. First up is the 1980 Mazda Familia hatchback which was essentially the Mazda3's forefather. Toyota had a 1981 Toyota Soarer Coupe and the GT HYBD, a gas-turbine hybrid concept version of its first production sports car, the Sports 800 that went on sale in 1965.

Tokyo Motor Show: Honda bring the Freed MPV to America

Freed's third row seats fold up against the sides of its body, leaving a completely flat load floor. At least two U.S. Honda PR people checking out the model loved the idea of offering it Stateside, although they'd be inclined to see two changes. Because of the micro-van's short length, they would drop the third row and move the second row back for more legroom. Additionally, the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine (the same one used in the U.S. Fit) would also likely be replaced by something a bit larger for the our market – possibly a 1.8-liter or even a 2.0-liter.


Here in Tokyo, we were hanging around with some American Honda Motor Co. officials when they got their first up-close look at the Freed. The Freed is a compact minivan/MPV based on Honda's Fit architecture. For reference, the six-seat, three-row Freed is about 15 inches shorter than a Mazda5 and about 4 inches longer than a U.S.-spec Fit.

Mazda Global Premiere of Eco-Friendly and Powerful Next Generation 'SKY-G' and 'SKY-D' Engines at Tokyo Motor Show 2009

HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the world premiere of its next-generation engine lineup and automatic transmissions at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, to be held from Saturday, October 24 through Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Mazda will exhibit the 'Mazda SKY-G' direct injection gasoline engine, the 'Mazda SKY-D' clean diesel engine and the 'Mazda SKY Drive' high-efficiency automatic transmission. The Tokyo Motor Show, to be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, will also mark the Japan debut of the Kiyora concept car as an exhibit of Mazda's next-generation environmental and safety technologies.


Mazda's theme for the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show is "The Mazda SKY concept -- Providing driving pleasure and environmental and safety features for all customers!" Under the headings of "Today," "Tomorrow" and "The Future," Mazda will display advanced technologies designed to improve the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold globally 30 percent by 2015 compared to 2008 levels. This is one of the goals of Mazda's long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom.


Mazda is committed to significantly improving the core aspects of its vehicles that affect performance – engines, transmissions, and lighter vehicle weight – in order to achieve elevated driving pleasure together with outstanding environmental and safety features. The Mazda SKY concept defines Mazda's approach to developing next-generation powertrains that will significantly improve the eco-friendliness and dynamic performance of all Mazda vehicles. The SKY concept embodies Mazda's desire to ensure an "everlasting blue sky" under which drivers will always be able to enjoy the fun-to-drive pleasure afforded by owning a Mazda. The concept also reflects the "sky's the limit" aspirations of Mazda's engineers as they employ unconventional thinking to achieve optimal performance in every vehicle that bears the Mazda nameplate.



Based on the SKY concept, Mazda's "Technologies for Tomorrow" display at this year's Tokyo Motor Show will include the next-generation direct injection gasoline Mazda SKY-G engine and the Mazda SKY-D clean diesel engine. Both offer improved eco-friendliness and torque thanks to optimized combustion efficiency. Mazda will also reveal the first next-generation automatic transmission, the Mazda SKY-Drive, which offers first-rate fuel economy and a direct driving performance feel.

Lotus has officially unveiled the limited edition Exige Scura (aka Dark Stealth) in Tokyo

Production will be limited to 35 units. Pricing starts at £45,000 in the UK, €60,000 in Germany, €61,885 in Italy, and €61,200 in France.


Power comes from a supercharged 1.8-liter engine with 191 kW (260 hp) and 236 Nm (174 lb-ft) of torque. Backed up by a six-speed manual transmission, the Stealth accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds before topping out at 245 km/h (152 mph). Despite this epic performance, the engine only consumes 8.5L/100km (26.7 mpg US) while emitting 199 grams of CO2 per kilometer.


Featuring a matte black paint scheme with high gloss ‘Phantom Black' stripes, the Stealth looks ready to pound the road into submission. Elsewhere, the black theme continues as the front splitter, side scoops, and rear spoiler are constructed out of carbon fiber.

Tokyo Motor Show: motorsports cars and bikes

The Tokyo Motor Show doesn't have as much going on in the way of cars as we'd like, but there are still a few gems among the pack – especially in the area of motorsports. The Japanese are as keen about their sports as they are their motors, and when the two are combined, you get some pretty tasty kit. Examples? Check out the Nissan GT-R Super GT, a rallying Japan Subaru WRX STi, several Moto GP offerings, and a Toyota F1 car. And unlike in the passenger car realm, the Europeans haven't been left out, with the Alpina B6 GT3 and a McLaren Formula One racer making a show of things.
