The Peugeot stand at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show will exhibit some of the more enviro-friendlier motor vehicle concepts on the entire floor. Included with these are two models in particular; the 3008 HYbrid4 and the sporting RCZ HYbrid4. These two are obviously powered by hybrid powertrains but with an uncommon twist. Instead of the popular petrol/ electric drive combination, HYbrid4 will be coupled to a turbo diesel motor.
Figures released show that the 3008 HYbrid4 Concept has a C02 rating of just 99g/km while the performance-oriented RCZ HYbrid4 Concept gives back 95g/km of the bad gases. The hybrid relies on parallel architecture which alternates between the diesel engine and the electric motor in accordance with each driving situation. The two can also be used at the same time for maximum performance.
The slow-burning fossil fuel is extremely popular in Europe where it can attain well over 60% market share in some countries. Peugeot's experience with diesel technology, especially the field of particle emissions filters puts it in good stead to develop these engines.
Savings of up to 35% in fuel consumption are expected based on equivalent engine performance. The system also opens up possibilities of a 4WD solution that uses an electric motor at the rear, without the disadvantages of mechanical connections.
A production 3008 HYbrid4 is scheduled to go on sale in 2010 while the RCZ HYbrid4 is still in its experimental stages.
