The first generation was a pony car built from 1970 to 1974, using the Chrysler E platform and sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda. The second generation, from 1978 to 1983, was badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda. The third, and current generation, was introduced in 2008 as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the revived fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

Six Video: 2010 Dodge Viper ACR makes the rounds at Laguna Seca, sets track record
The Dodge Viper is many things to many people. An object of unparalleled lust to some, a big-mouthed, truck-engined Corvette ripoff to others. And an ankle burner to still others. But no one ever thought of Dodge's V10 quarter-mile thug as a serious track car. Until the Viper ACR showed up.
Lighter (especially in Hardcore Package guise) and producing ten times as much downforce as the "regular" SRT10 Viper, the ACR model set off some pretty big waves when the big-winged snake debuted (especially in the Nurburgring record community), even though most of the rippling came from the street-legal slicks. But never mind all that, the new 2010 Dodge Viper ACR is here, and it's even better than the 2009 version.
Ralph Gilles congratulates driver Chris Winkler on his record-breaking lap in the 2010 Viper ACR (before sending him back out on the track to try a few more runs), which shattered the previous production car record of 1:35.075 by more than a full second.
Looks like Dodge, the Viper ACR and driver Chris Winkler just broke the Laguna Seca single-lap record with a time of 1:33.944. Those of you with longish memories will remember that a Devon GTX (powered by a Viper motor) recently set the (now) old record at Laguna -- 1.35.075. In other words, the new Viper ACR just beat the previous record by more than a second. Impressive. And yet another video, after the jump.
Chris isn’t done yet, heading back out on the track to see what this Viper’s limits really are. Watch the video of him taking the famous Andretti hairpin (and be glad that’s not you trying to pin that turn).
Chrysler just twittered: "To honor Viper's record-breaking lap at Laguna Seca, Dodge will rollout a Laguna Seca Special Edition Viper." Now that's planning product on your feet!

BSO challenger
We like police cars. Seriously. Just not when they're filling our rearview mirrors, blue-and-reds ablaze. Then, our fanboy status diminishes markedly.
In the meantime, however, we get pretty jazzed when a department does something a little different and cool. This week's example comes from the Broward County Sheriff's office, which appears to have added a fully-marked Dodge Challenger R/T to its fleet.
Decked out in the BSO's familiar green-and-white livery, the muscular Mopar looks like it means business, ready to take down speeders and bust up meth labs with aplomb. We totally want to see it in person the next time we're down in South Florida -- just under our own, friendly terms.

PETTY'S GARAGE NOW TURNING OUT CUSTOM MACHINES
The change at 311 Branson Mill Road in Level Cross, N.C., a facility that has produced more race winners than any other shop in the history of NASCAR, is amazing. The employees of a newly-formed Petty's Garage are transplanting that legacy of success into a new endeavor producing performance automobiles there. The first car from the historic garage will be a custom 2009 Dodge Challenger to be sold for charity at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in January 2010.
"For 61 years, Petty Enterprises built, engineered and raced some of the most-historic cars in all of NASCAR right from this shop," said 'The King' Richard Petty. "You're talking about Plymouth Belvederes, Superbirds, Road Runners, Torino's and Dodge Chargers. When racecars went from being a purely production car to a car built from the ground up, or modified, solely for racing, many of them came out of Level Cross. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish here and it was important for us to keep this place going."
Over the years, Petty Enterprises garnered 268 wins in what is now the Sprint Cup Series, ten championships and nine Daytona 500 wins from this facility. Now, Petty's Garage will focus on the manufacturing of performance vehicles, including the "museum-quality" restoration of vintage race vehicles, custom cars and high performance street vehicles. The first complete car project is the build of a Dodge Challenger to be sold at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in January of 2010 by the Petty Family Foundation (PFF). The proceeds of the sale will benefit the PFF and the charities it supports.
Established in 1971 and headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Barrett-Jackson specializes in providing products and services to collector car owners, astute collectors and automotive enthusiasts around the world. The company produces "The World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions™" in Scottsdale, Palm Beach, Fla., Las Vegas and Orange County, Calif. Barrett-Jackson also endorses a one-of-a-kind insurance offering for collector vehicles and other valued belongings.
"Richard Petty made a huge impact at our Scottsdale event earlier this year when he helped sell another MOPAR for charity," stated Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. "We're pleased that he chose one of our world class automotive lifestyle events to showcase the shop's talents and raise money for such a fantastic charity. It will be truly a historic event where someone will get to own a well-documented car built by the one and only, Richard Petty."
The 2009 Dodge Challenger was completely disassembled and placed on a rotisserie so it could be painted the trademark Petty Blue by BASF R ̶ M. Reassembly included a Late Model 426 Hemi by Arrington Engines with 585 hp, Pedders suspension upgrades, Brembo Gran Turismo brakes, a new Corsa Exhaust system with a Petty's Garage custom center exhaust exit and refinished all of the suspension to Petty Parts Blue by BASF R ̶ M. Body Modifications consisted of a Petty's Garage custom front fascia and rear bumper cover, Petty's Garage custom rocker panels, rear spoiler and Petty's Garage branded interior seats and door panels.
"This Challenger is special to me because I wanted to build something that I would drive on a daily basis," stated Petty. "I wanted the car to have a race car look, but be functional on the street and I think the guys really captured that. But most importantly it provides our foundation with the platform to help our Veterans, children with life threatening illness and our neighbors in need. Everyone at Petty's Garage is excited about getting this Challenger to Barrett-Jackson in January. I think it will do well when we get there. It definitely shows our capabilities and the auction will put us in front of the right people to show what we can do."

SEMA Show: HPP Daytona is one big Hot Wheels toy
Yes, it's a new Dodge Challenger wearing a Charger Daytona costume, but updated for today's muscle car aficionados. Under the hood sits a standard 5.7-liter HEMI V8, further proving the point that when it comes to the Daytona/Superbird, it's what's on the outside that counts! Luckily for us, HPP did a pretty decent job on the outside.
While we're positive that it's the same dimensions as the mondo-sized Daytona/Superbird wing, the new Challenger's trunk is about half the length of the Sixties/Seventies cars. Meaning it looks... not quite right. Also, this Mopar muscle car has grown so much since forty years ago that the car is just screaming for more wing. But we'll still happily take one, as the HPP Daytona was/is totally worth the hunt.
The nose cone works, and works well. Here comes the hate mail, but this author thinks the nose actually looks better than the original 1969 Charger Daytona's does. Here's a pic for reference. To be fair, the HPP's schnoz is actually much more like a Plymouth Superbird's than the Dodge. The wheels are great, the fake vents on the door are bad, the stance is right... and then we get to the rear wing.

The Dodge Ram brand continues to refine the boldest, most powerful and capable pickup truck on the planet with the introduction of the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty lineup, offering first-time innovations and features, along with new standards of strength, utility and driveability.
“This is the continuation of the reinvention of our Dodge Ram lineup,” said Fred Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer–Dodge Ram Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “During the past 5 years, Dodge has gained market share in the heavy-duty pickup segment, and to stay on that track, Dodge Ram keeps innovating. Our new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups will continue to build on our momentum.”
First and foremost, the new 2010 Dodge Ram is about capability. In fact, its many features—including powertrain, towing and payload capacities, driving dynamics, premium amenities and styling—truly make it the ultimate heavy-duty pickup truck.
“Our new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups continue to build on Dodge Ram’s leadership in the heavy-duty pickup segment,” said Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President—Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “Our Ram Heavy Duty pickups reinforce Dodge Ram’s bold and powerful reputation and provide improved capability in critical areas of the segment.”

The new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 pickups incorporate some of the design cues from the Dodge Ram 1500. The Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup’s larger grille incorporates a taller hood that includes louvers on each side. Access to the front winch (on Power Wagon models) and tow hooks led to a unique front-bumper design. The new dual-rear-wheel fenders (3500 dually only) are now integrated into the box stamping and offer a smooth aerodynamic appearance.
The Dodge Ram Heavy Duty will be available in U.S. dealerships in regular, Crew Cab and Mega Cab versions in five trim levels—ST, SLT, TRX, Laramie and Power Wagon—in the first quarter of 2010.
Ultimate Lineup
The new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickups are the result of exhaustive customer research and study.
“We went all over the country to learn how people really use their heavy-duty trucks at work and play,” said Diaz. “We did our research with a cross-functional team, and what we learned, we brought to the process of creating the all-new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups.”
The big news for the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickups is the addition of a crew-size cab. Crew-size cabs are the fastest-growing part of the truck segment, growing from approximately 20 percent of the market in 2002 to nearly 50 percent in 2008.
“Research confirmed that heavy-duty customers want a cab with four full-size doors,” said Diaz. Also available are regular cab and Mega Cab models.
Customers also want choice in packaging and equipment. As a result, Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty offers five distinct trim levels – ST, SLT, TRX, Laramie and Power Wagon. Each has a unique appearance and offers various equipment options.
“The heavy-duty segment comprises about a third of the full-size truck market, and its customers are the most brand loyal in the industry,” said Diaz. “With five models, we want to provide customers with the ultimate lineup of heavy-duty pickups.”
Total Dodge Ram (light- and heavy-duty) sales in 2008 were 15.3 percent of full-size pickup segment. Overall Dodge Ram Heavy Duty truck market share in 2008 was 23.0 percent of the heavy-duty truck segment.
The truck segment is still one of the largest segments in the industry, with just more than 1.6 million units sold in 2008.
On average, Dodge Ram Heavy Duty’s buyer is predominately male (90 percent) and approximately 55 years old. Eighty-five percent are married and earn an average annual income of $87,000. Thirty-four percent have graduated from college.
Fifty percent of heavy-duty truck buyers use their trucks for work, and 100 percent use their trucks for fun and leisure.
Dodge Ram’s Heavy-duty Résumé
Dodge Ram continues its strong heritage in the heavy-duty truck market by building on its past. Since 2003, Dodge Ram has launched new models or made improvements to its heavy-duty pickup truck lineup:
2003 – Launched all-new version of Ram Heavy Duty
2004 – Introduced diesel engine improvements
2005 – Introduced Dodge Ram Power Wagon
2006 – Introduced Dodge Ram Mega Cab
2008 – Introduced (2007.5 M.Y.) new 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine
2009 – Introduced new 5.7-liter HEMI® engine and new brake system for added brake life and improved fuel economy and new 3.42 axle ratio on diesel automatic transmission
And all-new for 2010, the Crew Cab, with either 6-foot-4-inch or 8-foot boxes, replaces the Quad Cab to meet Heavy-Duty truck customer needs and focus on overall vehicle refinement and ride comfort.
Ultimate Hauling and Towing Capability
The backbone of 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickups is a hydro-formed, fully boxed frame with advanced torsional rigidity and stiffness. A coil-spring suspension setup is used in the front of the vehicle, while the multi-leaf spring design is maintained in the rear for heavy-duty capability. Front and rear shocks and springs are tuned for optimum ride quality and capability.
Customers in the heavy-duty segment have a range of needs, and most of them involve high levels of capability. The new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 are designed to deliver a total package:
Increased Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) on 2500 4×4 crew cab diesel models to 9,600 pounds from 9,000 pounds
Increased Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) on 3500 dually models with diesel, auto transmission and 4.10 rear axle to 24,500 pounds from 24,000 pounds
Increased GCWR on 3500 4×2 models to 24,000 pounds from 23,000 pounds
Increased front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) on several models:
To 5,500 pounds from 5,200 pounds on diesel 4×4 pickups
To 5,000 pounds from 4,700 pounds on diesel 4×2 pickups
Suspension upgrades and larger front-axle U-joints, combined with increased front GAWR, result in increased front-weight carrying capability—a must for larger snowplows.
Towing capability is a strong suit of the new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, with the only standard exhaust brake in the segment (diesel-equipped models). This feature reduces brake fade, prolongs brake life and provides confidence and safety when hauling heavy loads on downhill grades. Large front (360 mm) and rear (358 mm) brakes with integrated Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) increase brake life and braking stability.
An available integrated trailer brake control provides better driver control in towing situations. Trailer brake control information is conveniently displayed in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), which is standard on diesel models and available on gas SLT, TRX and Laramie models.
In addition, new 2010 Dodge Ram transmissions feature Electronic Range Select, which enables the driver to manually limit the highest available transmission gear, allowing manual upshifts and downshifts based on road speed and engine speed. A tow/haul mode switch enhances tow capability while towing. Tow/haul mode is available with both five-speed and six-speed automatic transmissions.
Other tow-friendly features include improved trailer-tow mirrors with integrated turn signals, memory function and puddle lamps. The larger 7-inch x 11-inch trailer-tow mirrors offer improved visibility with larger convex glass surfaces. Mirrors flip up and out in a vertical configuration for improved visibility around wide trailers. Trailer-tow mirrors are now standard on Dodge Ram 3500 models. As an added convenience, a Class IV receiver is now standard on all Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups.
Ultimate Powertrains
In terms of power, the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty tops the charts with the available, legendary 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, which produces 350 horsepower (261 kW) at 3,000 rpm and 650 lb.-ft. of torque (881 N•m) at only 1,500 rpm.
The most durable and reliable engine in its class, the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel features standard oil-change intervals of 7,500 miles. It also has life-to-major overhaul intervals of 350,000 miles, providing more than a 100,000-mile advantage over the competition.
And it’s as clean as it is durable. The Cummins 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel engine uses a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to virtually eliminate particulate matter emissions and an adsorber catalyst to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) by as much as 90 percent in order to meet stringent 2010.5 diesel emissions requirements.
Backing up the available 6.7-liter diesel engine is a choice of either a standard G56 six-speed manual transmission or an available 68RFE six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed manual has an ultra-low first-gear ratio, which makes it ideal for heavy hauling requirements, while the six-speed automatic offers ease of driveability and towing.
The other choice for 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty customers is the standard 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 gasoline engine, which delivers 383 horsepower (286 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 400 lb.-ft. of torque (542 N•m) at 4,000 rpm. The 5.7-liter HEMI was redesigned for 2009, with several new and improved technologies, including:
Variable-valve Timing (VVT)
Increased compression ratio
Active intake manifold with long runners for low-end torque and short runners for high-rpm power
Improved cylinder-head port-flow efficiency
Reduced-restriction exhaust and induction systems
The 5.7-liter HEMI comes standard with the heavy-duty 545RFE five-speed automatic. It offers Electronic Range Select and tow-haul capability, which provide a unique shift schedule that minimizes gear hunting while towing heavy loads. It also provides automatic downshift capability while decelerating.
Two 4×4 transfer cases are available: the NV 271, a manual unit standard on ST and Power Wagon models; and the NV273, an electric shift-on-the-fly transfer case, standard on SLT, TRX and Laramie models.
A choice of four axle ratios are available on new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups, depending on equipment level: 3.42, 3.73, 4.10 or 4.56.
Ultimate Off-Road Capability
The Dodge Ram Power Wagon returns for the 2010 model year. It is equipped with electric-locking front and rear differentials, electronic disconnecting sway bar, Bilstein shocks, 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires, underbody skid plate protection, a 4.56 axle ratio for hill climbing and a custom-built Warn® 12,000-lb. winch that is accessible through the front bumper. The 2010 Dodge Ram Power Wagon features new exterior graphics and a lower body two-tone paint scheme.
Improved Ride Comfort
Improved suspension tuning and new fluid-filled hydromounts were added to the C-pillar mounts on the 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty to improve damping through the frame-bending mode frequency in order to better manage shake and after-shake response. The result is reduced shake and improved ride compared with the previous generation Ram Heavy Duty.
Twenty-five safety and security features
Dodge Ram employs a two-fold approach to safety: passive safety features, including pre-tensioning and load-limiting seat-belt retractors and active safety features, including responsive steering, handling and braking.
Following are 25 safety and security features available on new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups:
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS): Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions
Advanced multi-stage air bags: Use either an Occupant Classification System or a Low-risk Deployment Air Bag for the front passenger
BeltAlert: Periodically activates a chime and illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver and front passenger to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without the driver being properly belted
Brake/Park interlock: Prevents an automatic transmission or transaxle from being shifted out of Park unless the brake pedal is applied
Child-protection rear door locks: Disable the rear doors’ inside-release handle via a small lever on the door-shut face
Constant-Force Retractors (CFR): Distribute force or load exerted on a seat belt and then gradually release the seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner
Crumple zones: Designed to compress during an accident in order to absorb energy from an impact, decreasing transfer of that energy to occupants
Electronic brake-force distribution: Adjusts braking pressure front to rear,
based on weight distribution of passengers and cargo to minimize brake dive during hard braking Energy-absorbing steering column: The manual-adjust steering column utilizes two hydo-formed coaxial tubes that move relative to each other in order to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy absorption during a crash. The power-adjust steering column employs a calibrated bending element that collapses during column stroke for optimal energy management
Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS): Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking doors after air bag deployment. Also shuts off the flow of fuel to the engine
Height-adjustable seat belts: Allow occupants to raise and lower the shoulder belt. Encourage seat-belt use by offering a more comfortable fit
HomeLink universal home security system transceiver: Stores three separate transmitter radio-frequency codes to operate garage-door openers, security gates, security lighting or other radio-controlled devices Interior head-impact protection: Interior pillars above the beltline and instrument panel, including areas around windshield and rear-window headers, roof and side-rail structures and shoulder-belt turning loops specifically designed to limit head-impact force
Knee bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove box door are designed to properly position the occupant, enabling air bags to work effectively
Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) Child Seat Anchor System: Designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats
Low-risk deployment air bag: Front-passenger air bag that uses unique shape, venting, folding patterns, advanced inflators or a combination of these four technologies to position and inflate the restraint properly for a belted passenger, while also meeting federal safety requirements for out-of-position, small occupants and rear-facing infant seats. Occupants are advised to always sit properly in their seats with the seat belt fastened. Children 12 years old and younger should always be seated in the back seat correctly using an infant or child restraint system or have the seat belt positioned correctly for their age and weight
Parksense® Rear Park Assist System: Assists at low speeds in reverse to detect stationary objects. Consists of visible (interior lights seen with rearview mirror) and audible warnings for the driver
Power-adjustable pedals: Allows brake, accelerator and clutch (if equipped) pedals to move toward or away from the driver in order to achieve a safe and comfortable seating position for improved vehicle control
Remote Keyless Entry: Locks and unlocks doors, and turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a vehicle-theft security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system
Seat-belt pretensioners: During a collision, the impact sensors initiate front seat-belt pretensioners to immediately remove slack, thereby reducing the forward movement of the occupants’ heads and torsos
Sentry Key® engine immobilizer: Utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a pre-programmed security code to discourage vehicle theft. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder and the engine is allowed to start. If an incorrect key is used, the engine will shut off after a few seconds
Standard side-curtain air bags: Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor in order to autonomously trigger the air bag on the side where an impact occurs
Three-point seat belts: Provide front outboard seating positions and all rear seating positions in the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy-Duty pickups with lap and shoulder belts
Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM): Informs driver when tire pressure is too low. SLT and Laramie systems display actual tire pressure at each wheel. Pressure-sensor modules within the valve stems of all four road wheels send continuous radio-frequency signals to a receiver and the system (2500 only)
Uconnect Phone: Uses Bluetooth technology to provide voice-controlled wireless communication between the occupants’ compatible mobile phone and the vehicle’s onboard receiver. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility
Bold Exterior Design
The new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickups carve out a unique design with styling differentiated from the Dodge Ram light-duty lineup.
“We brought some of the best design cues from our Dodge Ram 1500 to the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty, yet we set the 2500 and 3500 pickups apart from our light-duty trucks,” said Ralph Gilles, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dodge Car Brand and Senior Vice-President–Product Design, Chrysler Group LLC. “The ‘big-rig’ styling is even more pronounced with the classic Dodge look that conveys bold, powerful and capable.”
Styling the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty encompassed practical as well as aesthetic considerations.
To accommodate cooling requirements of the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine (perennially the most popular powerplant in the Ram Heavy Duty lineup with a take-rate of 90 percent), the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty grille opening is larger than the light-duty grille. The larger grille incorporates a taller hood that includes louvers on each side. Access to the front winch (on Power Wagon models) and tow hooks led to a unique front-bumper design.
The new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty grille includes a chromed surround with either black center billets (ST, SLT and Power Wagon models) or chromed center billets (Laramie model and Big Horn and Lone Star editions). Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 TRX models feature a body-color surround with black center billets. The grille is body-mounted, while the bumper is frame-mounted.
Front fenders and headlamps of the new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 are shared with light-duty pickup models. External mirrors are sculpted to produce a more useable area for better visibility, with aerodynamic benefit and less noise. Mirrors are equipped with turn-signal indicators, memory function, puddle lamps and adjustable convex mirrors. Mirrors are finished in black on ST, SLT, TRX and Power Wagon, or black and chrome on Laramie models. The larger 7-inch x 11-inch mirror for trailer towing is standard on 3500 models and available on 2500 model pickups. These mirrors flip up and out into a vertical configuration for trailer-tow use.
Front and rear doors follow the style pioneered by the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500–a design that places the door cut to the side of the truck, rather than into the roof, in order to reduce wind noise and weight.
The new dual-rear-wheel fenders (3500 dually only) are now integrated into the box stamping and offer a smooth aerodynamic appearance.
The tailgate is sculpted for better air flow, incorporating a spoiler in the upper part of the sheet metal. This tailgate also accommodates an available back-up camera for convenient trailer hook-ups and includes a lift-assist feature that makes raising and lowering a one-hand operation. Standard bedrail protection is included with both the 6-foot-4-inch and 8-foot cargo boxes. The boxes now feature bedrail caps that protect sheet metal from dents and scratching.
Upgraded Interiors: Ultimate Comfort, Convenience and Appearance
Inside, the new 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty offers abundant amenities, comfort and convenience. Many of the comfort and convenience features were first pioneered with the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500.
Interior appointments include soft-feel door bolsters and armrests and one-piece molded door panels for premium comfort. Seats are redesigned with improved power lumbar and lateral support, which creates a comfortable cabin on even the longest work days. Six-ring instrumentation keeps track of vehicle functions, while many controls are arrayed in the center stack for easy access to buttons and knobs.
Other available features include two-tone upholstery with full-width contrasting stitching on the instrument panel; premium seating with heat and ventilation; heated rear seats; heated steering wheel; automatic temperature control; two-tone upholstery; memory seats, radio and mirrors; navigation; adjustable pedals and numerous infotainment options, including SIRIUS Backseat TV™ with three channels of programming, Uconnect Multimedia with a 30-gigabyte hard drive and an available first-in-segment 10-speaker surround-sound system.
Storage is top-of-mind with many work- and leisure-oriented customers, and Dodge Ram provides many more storage locations in its new 2010 Ram Heavy Duty pickups.
A new-for-2010 available center console features an upper bin that is large enough to hold a laptop computer (with an accessible power outlet) and a lower bin that accommodates hanging files. In addition, the console offers several other storage compartments—room enough to store business tools and personal items.
Additional storage locations are built into the instrument panel, front and rear door panels, seat backs and even the floor. In the crew-size cab, two in-floor bins located in the rear footwells offer storage enough for 10 12-ounce cans. Bins have removable liners for easy cleanout. Upper and lower glove boxes provide a total of more than 800 cubic inches of storage.
The Ultimate Cab – Mega Cab
The new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Mega Cab models retain their title of best-in-class interior room in the segment, including:
Largest, longest cab (143.2 cubic feet, 111.1 inches long)
Largest interior cargo volume (72.2 cubic feet)
Largest cargo volume behind rear seat (7.7 cubic feet)
Largest flat-floor load area (16.8 square feet)
Largest second-row leg room (44.2 inches)
Largest rear-door opening (34.5 inches wide, 35.5 inches high)
Largest rear-door open angle (85 degrees)
First-ever reclining rear seats (22- to 37-degree seat-back angle)
Saltillo Assembly Plant
The new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups will be built at Chrysler Group LLC’s Saltillo Assembly Plant in Coahuila, Mexico. One of the company’s most flexible plants, the Saltillo plant produces the Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab, the Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty and the Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs.
The manufacturing processes in use at the Saltillo facility provide the ability to balance production with demand and enable the plant to efficiently build low-volume vehicles that take advantage of market niches. As needed, the plant can quickly shift production volumes between different models within a single plant or among multiple plants. This not only allows the company to produce a high-quality product, but also to do so faster and at lower cost.
Production of the new 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups also will be enabled by the Saltillo plant’s recent expansion, which allows the facility to manage the added complexity of the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickups’ chassis and suspensions, including two chassis lengths, regular, crew-size cab and Mega Cab versions, 4×2 and 4×4 variants, and single- and dual-rear-wheel models.
The Saltillo Assembly Plant has more than 1,700 employees on two shifts and is one of five Chrysler Group LLC manufacturing facilities in Mexico.

Video: Plymouth Road Runner SUPERBIRD Concept

Artist Michael Leonhard first tipped us off to his design sketches of the
Plymouth Road Runner Concept back in June. He has now kicked his drawings up a
notch with these renderings, dubbed the Road Runner Superbird Concept.
In Leonhard's mind, he sees his version of the Superbird as a late 60's NASCAR
killer. With a HEMI engine (of course), the artist wanted to create an American
style sports car that has muscle and reduced drag.
"[It has] a sleek nose cone that slips into air like a knife through butter;
incorporating a spoiler below the centered grille opening," writes Leonhard. He
also integrated an exhaust system into the rocker panel. The ideally aluminum
two-panel rear spoiler is massive, and would create "enormous downforce," he
says.
Keeping with the NASCAR look, Leonhard added the Richard Petty-inspired artwork.
If built, the Plymouth Road Runner Superbird Concept would ride on 19-inch white
magnesium rims up front, and 21-inchers at back.

New for Chrysler in 2010: Not much

Chrysler's in a tough spot right now. The beleaguered automaker survived the Daimler fiasco only to be picked up by an indifferent Cerberus team before ultimately ending up in bankruptcy court. Chrysler came out of those proceedings with a new dance partner in Fiat, and while the new company has a healthier balance sheet, a lack of funding has left the Pentastar with a nearly empty cupboard when it comes to new 2010 products.

Jeep Liberty, Dodge Nitro and the light-duty Ram pickup have a system for 2010 that turns off the fuel during deceleration to increase fuel efficiency. The driver will know it is happening when the "eco" button on the dashboard lights up. Much of the 2010 lineup, including all Jeeps, are equipped with the eco feature.
The Dodge Journey gains 1 mpg in efficiency with a 3.5-liter V-6.
Many of the tweaks to the lineup make optional features standard. Some vehicles come with a price cut, like the Dodge Caravan SXT minivan with a base price that is $2,180 lower for 2010.
The new heavy-duty Ram pickup comes as a crew cab for the first time, allowing Dodge to play in the highest volume part of the market. It will be followed up for 2011 with a new fleet of commercial trucks, as the Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs will debut.

As for the rest of the lineup, Chrysler did the most it could with its limited resources. Among the running changes for the 2010 model year are an improved Dodge Caliber interior, an updated, smooth-hooded Chrysler Sebring (as if anyone's going to notice) and plenty of fuel economy-related updates. The Dodge Nitro, Jeep Liberty and light-duty Ram receive a fuel cutoff feature during deceleration. The Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot add entry-level 2.0L four-cylinder models that deliver nominal fuel economy gains (2 mpg in the Dodge, 1 mpg in the Jeeps). The 3.5L Dodge Journey, a car that we'd all but forgotten about, will also see tweaks that will allow it to pick up an additional mpg as well.

The Chrysler brand will see changes to the creased hood on the Sebring sedan and convertible, which will be replaced with a conventional and smoother hood for 2010. New wheels complete the look. Inside, the gauges have been redesigned.
Chrysler's new management decided to keep the Dodge Viper and extend the 2009 model year. There are four new colors, including a "snakeskin green" and a new interior with tan Nappa leather seats.

Finally, Chrysler hopes to entice buyers by making previously optional equipment standard for 2010, while also adjusting pricing. The Dodge Caravan cost of entry has been lowered by $2,180 to $21,800, giving families a budget-priced option in the minivan market. Oh, and one last thing -- a limited edition Dodge Challenger SRT8 will be offered in Plum Crazy for 2010. Now that sounds genuinely interesting.

Hurst Releases signature color combo on Series 4 Challenger

Hurst Performance Vehicles, one of the most recognized and revered names in automobile history, unveiled the first-ever Series 4 Supercharged 2010 Hurst/Hemi Challenger, dressed in the signature silver and black Hurst colors at the "Back to the Bricks" celebration in Flint, Mich.
Hurst legend, Doc Watson, joined Nate Shelton and Ron Flint of Hurst Performance Vehicles to unveil this newest addition to the Hurst Performance Series, which is complete with red accent stripes and detail throughout.
"We are honored to be here in Flint today to introduce the newest Hurst Executive Hot Rod," said Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst. "The Back to the Bricks celebration is the perfect place for us to join Doc and introduce this stunning car as a tribute to Hurst's legacy."

The numbered silver and black Challengers come equipped with a wild red anodized HARD-DRIVE® pistol grip Hurst shifter and 20" one-piece polished aluminum Hurst forged wheels, featuring graphite gray painted spoke insets and red and black Hurst logo wheel centers. Hurst collaborated with Katzkin on the car's black leather interior, which features perforated red inserts, red top-stitching and logos. Each Challenger contains traditional Hurst red and black logos in the dash badge, grille badge, wheel centers, fender graphics and the embroidered floor mats.
Doc Watson and Hurst introduced the silver and black Hurst/Olds with GM in 1968, a program that went on to be the most famous Hurst production program ever.
"I am proud to be part of the continuation of a great Hurst tradition." said Watson. "These wonderful vehicles should prove to be some of the most collectible Hurst cars in the future."

Hurst limited edition cars are well known by enthusiasts worldwide and are some of the most iconic and valuable muscle cars sought out by collectors. The cars are readily recognizable due to Hurst's signature paint schemes and graphics.
The Performance Series cars are a limited numbered series. Each comes with a sequentially numbered dash badge and its own Certificate of Authenticity. These cars all feature Hurst's own AIR-SPEED® rear deck spoiler painted in body colors, Hurst/Eibach suspension, shocks and sway bars, Hurst/Magnaflow polished stainless steel cat-back exhaust, BF Goodrich KDW Performance Tires, Hurst/Katzkin leather interior, embroidered logo floor mats, a custom car cover and K&N Air Filters. Hurst cars feature painted stripes and graphics under clear, not stickers. SERIES 3 through 5 feature HURST/Vortech superchargers.

The HURST/Hemi®-Challenger is available in five performance stages. Series 2 vehicles are available through participating Dodge dealers nationwide, while Series 3, 4 and 5 vehicles are only available from Hurst Performance Vehicles and can be ordered via the company's website at www.hurst-performance.com.

eBay Find of the Day: World's nicest Dodge Rampage?
Listen, we're not complaining here. Folks who restore old cars are to be applauded. Period. Mostly, the resto subjects are rides with mass appeal -- cars everyone is familiar with. Those are great and all, but the really insane aficionados are the ones who restore things you'd never think of. Seriously, though -- would you restore a 1982 Dodge Rampage? Frankly, we probably wouldn't either
But in this case, some Mopar lunatic did. And we want to hug him. We'll go out on a limb here and say that this is probably The Nicest Rampage in America, because on the exceedingly rare occasion when we actually see one out and about, it's usually a tired-looking disaster that's hauling something like 300 pounds of manure and/or a month's worth of recycling.
This one? Concours condition. It's pretty amazing. Anything that wasn't up to snuff was replaced. You could touch the engine bay and then perform open-heart surgery without scrubbing in -- it's that clean.
If a perfect Rampage in Sport Edition duds is the missing link in your personal collection, $12,900 on eBay is all that stands between you and forgotten-car Nirvana. Will people think you're crazy for spending that much on a Rampage? Probably, but screw those haters. They're just jealous.
