Volvo has announced plans to become a world leader in plug-in hybrid technology following a partnership with Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall.
The manufacturer said its first car to use this technology will be available in 2012 and it will offer “high safety and genuine driving pleasure”.
The first-ever electric Volvo is also under consideration as long as it can meet strict safety requirements.
Volvo’s green strategy, dubbed Drive Towards Zero, envisions a future free from both emissions and accidents, said the company’s CEO, Stephan Odell.
“I would go so far as to say that the plug-in electrical hybrid we will launch in 2012 will be a true dream car. With the innovative solution we will offer, the car owner will be able to drive a thoroughly enjoyable car packed with Volvo's renowned high safety and genuine driving pleasure,” he added.
Volvo’s plug-in hybrid will use a diesel engine running on renewable synthetic diesel to supplement the batteries.
It is claimed the car will have class-leading range and carbon dioxide emissions will be less than 50g/km.
